Contemporary

Punks at a music festivalCurrent have different clothing habits, although there's often crossover between the different subgroups in terms of style.

Standard punk
modern punks wear leather, denim, spikes, chains, and combat boots. They often wear elements of early punk fashion, such as:
kutten vests,
bondage pants (often plaid) and torn clothing.
There are influence by DIY-created and modified clothing, such as ripped or stitched-together pants or shirts. Hair is typically dyed in bright colors such as red, blue, green, pink or orange and arranged into a mohawk or liberty spikes. Hair could also be cut very short or shaved. Belts with metal studs, and bullet belts, are popular. Leather or denim jackets and vests often have patches or are painted with logos that express musical tastes or political views. Pants are usually tapered tightly. Metal spikes or studs are often added to jackets and vests.Young women in Morecambe in 2003 show off their elaborate, dyed hairstyles at a club.

Hardcore
There are several styles of dress within the hardcore scene, and styles have changed since the genre started as hardcore punk in the late 1970s. What is fashionable in one branch of the hardcore scene may be frowned upon in another. Clothing styles are often chosen to make moshing easier to perform. Plain working class dress and short hair (with the exception of dreadlocks) are usually associated with hardcore punk. Mute colors and minimal adornment are usually common. Some elements of hardcore clothing are baggy jeans or work pants, athletic wear, cargo or military shorts, band T-shirts, plain T-shirts, and band hoodies. Personal comfort and the ability to mosh are highly influential in this style (Jewellery, spikes, tight clothes, flashy hair and chains are highly uncommon and discouraged in hardcore fashion, Although baggier skinny jeans are becoming popular.)

Anarcho-Punk
Anarcho-punk fashion is a politicised adaptation of traditional punk fashion. This all black militaristic fashion was pioneered by Crass in the United Kingdom and by T.S.O.L. in the United States. A prominent feature is the heavy use of anarchist symbols and slogans. Some whom define themselves as Anarcho-Punks may opt to wear clothing similar to traditionalist punks or crust punks, but not often to the extreme of either subculture.

Crust punk
Is extreme evolution of traditional punk fashion, and is heavily influenced by bands such as Doom, Amebix and Antisect. Typical crust punk fashion includes black or camouflage trousers or shorts covered in patches (heavy work pants are popular for their durability), torn band T-shirts or hoodies covered in patches, studded vests and jackets (commonly black denim), bullet belts, jewelry made from hemp and other natural/found objects, and sometimes bum flaps. Patches, even band patches, are often of a political nature. Clothing tends to be unwashed and unsanitary by conventional standards, and dreadlocks are popular.

Gothic rock/Deathrock and Horror punk
Deathrock and Horror punk fashion is similar to goth fashion. Black is the predominant shade. Deathrock and horror punk incorporates a sexier image, incorporating fishnets, corsets and elaborate make-up for men and women. The use of occult and horror imagery is prevalent on T-shirts, buttons, patches and jewellery. The Misfits' "Fiend Skull" emblem is often hand-stencilled onto articles of clothing or worn as a cloth patch. Other common adornments include band names painted on jackets or bleached into clothes, as well as buttons or patches indicating cities. The initials D and R (for Death Rock) may part of a crossbone logo, accompanied by other initials, such as C and A for California, N and Y for New York, or G and R for Germany. Hair may be in deathhawk style (a wider teased-out variant of the mohawk hairstyle), an angled bangs style, or in a devilock style. The traditional 80's Gothic Rock gave birth to the teased mohawk, unlike the Punk mohawk which was often fanned or spiked the Goth mohawk which is often referred to as the Death Hawk was slightly wider and teased, often crimped as well. Two women with gothic-punk hair, makeup, and piercings chat on the street in 2007

Skate punk
skateboarder that listens to punk rock. Many wear clothing such as open plaid button down shirts are common, band tees, baggy shorts or semi-tight jeans (often black.) They also may wear cheap generic clothes and patches on their back pockets They often carry a bandana (folded or messed up) in their right or left back pocket. Some have also been influenced by the Cholo/gang style. While most skaters have long and messy hair Skate Punks usally have short working class style of hair. skate brands are common to wear such as Baker, Emerica, Fallen, Toy Machine, Vans,Adio and Zero. The Baker,Zero and Deathwish teams are the best examples of skate punks.Hoodies with Patches and spray painted graphics are also common.

Pop punk
this punks sometimes overlaps with skater punk fashion and emo fashion. Contemporary pop punk fans often wear items such as band T-shirts with, tie or scarf; blazers; Dickies pants, tight skinny pants, jeans or shorts; studded belts; Converse All-Stars or Vans Off The Wall, skateboarder shoes, and often fitted hats. Popular patterns include checkers and arms. Hair is usually long for women, and short and spiky for men — and is sometimes dyed black, platinum blonde, or natural hair colors with unnatural streaks.

Droog
Some punks dress similarly to the droogs in the film A Clockwork Orange. This involves white boiler suits, bowler hats, black Dr. Martens or combat boots, suspenders and sometimes black eye makeup (on one eye only). This look has been displayed by bands such as The Adicts and Lower Class Brats, The Violators and Major Accident.

Suicidals
Suicidals (and some individuals in the later hardcore scene) dress in styles associated with the Cholo gang member look. Cholo punk is another term used, but is better suited for those who are more heavily influenced by the Cholo/gang culture. This look, influenced by the California band Suicidal Tendencies, involves wearing bandanas (primarily blue in color) on one's head, Converse sneakers and other skateboard shoes, and blue plaid flannel shirts (usually worn with only the top button done up). Other commonly worn items include knee-high white socks, khaki shorts, baggy Diesel jeans and blue basketball jerseys with the number thirteen on them. Suicidal Tendencies T-shirts, as well as related band T-shirts (e.g. Beowulf, Excel and No Mercy) were popular, as well as white tank tops. This style sometimes includes a shaved head, short mohawk, crewcut or long Jay Adams-style hair. Another item associated with the Suicidals scene is a baseball cap or trucker hat with the bill upturned, and with text written or painted on it. Another associated item is a white dress shirt with hand-drawn Suicidal related iconography on the back (e.g. Skulls, satanic imagery, the number 13 or the words Suicidal, Venice or Cyco). Many such shirts were drawn by Ric Clayton.

Commercialization
Punk fashion has been extremely commercialized at various times, and many well-established fashion designers — such as Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier — have used punk elements in their production. Punk clothing, which was initially handmade, became mass produced and sold in record stores and some smaller specialty clothing stores by the 1980s. Many fashion magazines and other glamor-oriented media have featured classic punk hairstyles and punk-influenced clothing. These have caused controversy, as many punks view it as having sold out.

Batik: Royal Art of Indonesia
Sunday, August 31, 2008
Batik is one of several "court arts", along with shadow play of wayang purwa, court dances, gamelan or authentic Javanese percussion orchestra, and poetry. The art is an extension of the philosophy based on the spiritual discipline. Control, etiquette, and harmony are of central importance to the Javanese. Any conflicts in design or style are to be avoided.

Batik incorporates a few elements of meditation. Breathing and total concentration are of necessity to draw fine, even lines with canting. Batik drawing requires calm and peaceful psychological state; observing it also induces a meditative state of mind. Controlled breathing is essential in painting batik. Like court dancers and gamelan perfomers, batik painter must clear one's mind through fasting or abstinence.

The ego must be contained to achieve a perfect harmony between the mind and the batik technique or design. A superior batik is synonymous with harmony.
The design vocabulary for batik is derived from various aesthetic orientations and often inspired by rituals. The upper-classes participated in the rituals and undoubtedly contributed in defining the batik designs. Geometric patterns prevalent at the court were motifs like the ceplok, the kawung, the nitik and the lereng or garis miring

Ceploks or Ceplokan are geometric designs with figuratives and epitomes of the living things, such as flowers, buds seeds, fruit-stones and sometimes even animals.

Kawung was the favorite motif of the Sultan of Yogyakarta's Royal Court. For many years the motif was forbidden to all but the members of Sultan's immediate family. The history of kawung goes back to the 8th century with the wall of the Shivatik Prambanan temple as the evidence.

Nitiks, like the word batik, comes from the word root syllable of tik, meaning drop or droplet. This fact has led some scholars to assert the motif as the most ancient of all.

Breathing Techniques & Meditation

Breathing
Pranayama ( Breath control ) is at the very heart of yoga practice. Basically, Hatha Yoga is mastery of body and of breath. Yogic breathing revitalizes the entire body, balances the emotions, and promotes clarity of mind. All breathing exercises should performed sitting down, keeping the spine, neck, and head in a straight line. This will facilitate the flow of prana and create the space for the lungs to expand more fully.

Full yogic breathing
This one is the basic yogic breathing, also known as diaphragm breathing. This one performed with deep, soft and rhythmic flow of breath. When inhale, the abdomen expanding first, then the rib cage, and finally filling the entire chest. As exhale, the air will leave the lower lungs first, then the rib cage, and lastly the chest. The benefit of practicing full yogic breathing is that it promotes clarity and peace to the mind, also massage the rib cage.

Ujjayi ( Victorius Breathing )
Breath slowly and narrow the vocal chords slightly as you inhale through the nose with the mouth closed. The breath will vibrate the back of the throat. As you exhale, you should hear a throaty sound. The benefit of practicing ujjayi is that it soothes the nerves, cools the mind, strengthens the abdomen, also improves concentration.

Anuloma Viloma ( Alternate Nostril Breathing )
This one performed with the right hand performing Vishnu Mudra . Close the right nostril with the thumb. Inhale through the left nostril for a count of four. Close your left nostril with the ring and little finger, hold the breath for the count of eight. Release the right nostril, and exhale slowly with control to a count of four. Inhale through the right nostril for a count of four. Close our right nostril with the thumb, hold the breath for the count of eight. Release the left nostril, and exhale slowly with control to a cout of four. Repeat this 10 times. Anuloma Viloma strenghtens the whole respiratory system and rids the body of toxins, also balances the left and right brain.

Kapalabhati ( Cleansing Breath )
Inhale slowly and smoothly, then exhale, contracting the abdominal muscles sharply, raising the diaphragm, and forcing the air out. Inhale, and relax the muscles. Repeat 20 times, slowly and rhytmically. It has affects to clear the mind, rids the lower lungs of stale air, and tone the stomach, heart, and liver.

Bhastrika ( Belows Breath )
Bhastrika means ' bellows '. After performing Kapalabhati, take one slow smooth deep breath through both nostrils, hold it for a few seconds, then let it out of the nostrils in a one slow smooth continuous flow. This completes one round. Repeat 3 times.

Sitkari ( Hissing Sound Breath )
The lips are slightly parted and the tip of the tongue is thrust between the upper and lower teeth, with enough space is left between the tongue and the upper lip for air to be drawn in, producing a hissing sound. The air strike freshly on the forepart of the tongue and has a cooling effect. When the lungs are comfortably inflated, the lips are closed. Hold the breath for a few seconds, then exhale through the nostrils. Repeat 2 times.

Shitali ( Cooling Breath )
Same as Sitkari, inhalation taking place through the mouth and exhalation through the nostril. The tongue is pushed between the teeth, and curl up the outer edgess to form a trough through which the air is drawn. The tongue is kept between the lips. Draw air slowly and smoothly along the folded tongue. Then draw the tongue back into the mouth and bring the lips together, holding the breah. Finally, let the air out smoothly and continuously through both nostrils. Repeat 2 times.

Meditation is an effective way of focusing the mind to bring about relaxation, peace, and tranquility. Meditation improves concentration, increases self-awareness, and enables us to combat stress by helping us to relax and cope. Meditation is much more than simply relaxation. During relaxation the mind wanders uncontrollably, whereas during meditation the mind stays alert and focused.

Meditation helps us to restore balance between the right and left sides of the brain. The left side of the brain deals with thinking, speaking, and writing. When we awake and in a busy, thinking state of mind, the brain emits faster electrical patterns called ' beta ' waves. In this state we are able to rasionalize and think about the past and future. The right side of the brain deals with intuition, imagination, and feeling. When we are sensing something - such as listening to music - we are in a receptive rather than an active state, the brain emits slower electrical patterns called 'alpha' waves. In this alpha state we are more passive and open to our feelings. The alpha state is most likely to happen when we live in the present rather than in the future or the past.

There are various types of meditation but they all focus on quietening the mind. The intention is to direct your concentration so that it filled with peace and calm and cannot take off on its own and become stressed. When the mind is calm and focused in the present, it is neither reacting to memories nor worrying over the future, two major sources of chronic stress. Meditation should practiced with correct posture and breathing. You can adapt yoga's sitting postures, such as lotus ( padamasana ), half-lotus ( ardha padmasana ), easy posture ( sukhasana ), or perfect posture ( siddhasana ). You can even meditate while sitting on the chair. Whatever you choose, meditation should be enjoyable and comfortable. If you are not comfortable, you won't be able to meditate.
Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra means psychic sleep. It is a state of sleepless sleep where one is on the borderline between sleep and wakefulness. It is a state of inner awareness and contact with the subconscious and higher consciousness, brings a state of deep relaxation and can be a preliminary of sleep. Most people do not know how to sleep. They fall asleep while thinking over some problem or while prey to some anxiety. In sleep their mind runs on and their body is tense. They wake up feeling lethargic and unrested and doze on for half and hour longer. With yoga nidra, it will relax the whole body and mind. In this deep sense of relaxation that result, tension is released, the mind become clear and thoughts are more powerful. In yoga nidra we contact our inner personality to change our attitude towards ourselves and others. It is a methods of introspection. It has been used by yogis since time immemorial to bring them face to face with the inner self.
Antar Mouna
In sanskrit words, Antar Mouna means ‘ Inner Silence ‘. In our daily life our minds are almost continually externalized. We see and hear only what is going on outside of us, and we have little understanding of the events taking place in our inner environment. The practice of antar mouna is designed to turn this around, so that for at least a short period we can see the workings of our mind and understand them. In reality the practice of antar mouna is one of the few ‘permanent sadhanas’ which can be practised spontaniously all the twenty four hours of the day by anyone who is really determined to know oneself. By maintaining awareness of one’s internal environment, thoughts, emotional reactions, etc., one can speed up one’s personal evolution to the utmost degree. It will make one understand the workings of one’s own rational and irrational mind, as well as giving one an understanding of what makes other people tick. Although it is to be practised for a maximum of one hour a day, its efects carry on after the practice is over, and one will automatically start to know his own ‘hidden side’ and to see how he is reacting to life’s situation in a clear and honnest manner.
